Chester Arthur – developed Bright’s disease, and in his last two years was frequently confined to bed.
Grover Cleveland developed jaw cancer during his second term.
Woodrow Wilson, toward the end of his second term, was incapacitated by a series of strokes while on a national campaign on behalf of the passage of the Treaty of Versailles. He was confined to bed for most of the rest of his term. His wife reportedly ran the government in his absence.
Theodore Roosevelt – In 1912 a gunman’s bullet was slowed by a 50-page speech and an eyeglass case jammed in his coat pocket. The bullet entered between two ribs. But Roosevelt, even though he was bleeding, gave the speech.
Franklin Roosevelt never let the public know he had failed to recover from the polio he suffered in the 1920’s. Photographers were forbidden to take his photo getting in and out of automobiles.
Calvin Coolidge, after the death of his son at sixteen showed signs of severe grief and depression. He tried his best to hide the pain he was suffering.
Dwight Eisenhower suffered a series of heart attacks from 1949 to 1955. It was only after his condition was obvious that the truth that he had suffered a massive cardiac arrest was revealed.
John Kennedy’s Addison’s disease and other gastriontestinal issues were kept hidden. By the 1970’s it was well known Kinnedy had been gravely ill during his presidency.
Ronald Reagan suffered maladies common to older men. When he was shot in 1981, staffers did not reveal how much blood he had lost. He also had a couple of cancer scares during his term. But five years after he left office, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Many believe this condition began while he was president.
George H.W. Bush suffered Graves disease.
